A district council spokesman defended closing a toilet block in the early evening when a town centre festival was in full swing. Derbyshire Dales District Council left its facility open an extra hour on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday during public celebrations, however many spectators were caught short when it closed at 6pm after they returned to town. The spokesman said: “We operate several toilets in Ashbourne that open 24 hours”, adding the council was concerned about vandalism.
