Scottish local authority launches consultation into public toilet charges

A Scottish local authority has recently launched a public consultation regarding the application of charges for access to public toilets, in a bid to obtain the necessary funding for keeping them open, a news report has been able to reveal.

The Highland Council is asking communities whether a 50p charge should be applied for using the Council-run public toilets. Many of the conveniences can be used free of charge while others, including sites in Aviemore, Fort Augustus and Inverness, cost 20p.

The running costs are estimated at about £16 each time they are used. Cardiff council said the automated units would close on 31 March before being removed.
 
Its 20-year operational contract was meant to run until April 2025.

New business venture could stop Scarborough public toilets from closing

Scarborough businesses could be asked to take over the running of the local public toilets, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Scarborough Borough Council is to go out to consultation on a plan to overhaul its stock of public conveniences. The council currently owns and operates 38 public toilets throughout the borough, and a number of the village toilets will be offered to the parish councils to run.
