The Anchor Yard toilets in New Road, Basingstoke, might be closed by October, following the issuing of a proposal by the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
According to a report in the local media, council members argue that the old and unsightly toilets actually affect the town’s image. Naturally, shutting down the toilets will also save quite a bit of money if this move is approved – £32,000 in annual running costs, and an anticipated £117,000 in maintenance over the next 20 years.
Director of borough council services Karen Brimacombe said that “These toilets, particularly at Anchor Yard, are outdated and do little to add to the positive image of Basingstoke town centre. The council has ambitious plans to regenerate Top of The Town and it would seem essential that it considers, as part of the Town Centre Project, what sort of facilities it would require in the future.”
The savings attained by closing down the public toilets are indeed quite impressive, but keeping them open might actually be an easier task than expected, especially if the council decides to start charging a small access fee for their use. And the best solution for such an undertaking is represented by the Coin Operated Turnstiles manufactured by Toilet Turnstiles.
Built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, our turnstiles also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.
The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
